Passport status
ECR or ECNR: what your passport means.
A passport endorsed ECR needs emigration clearance before travel for a job in one of 17 listed countries. A passport with no ECR endorsement is ECNR and does not.

In short
- ECR means Emigration Check Required. It is endorsed on the passport.
- ECNR is never written on a passport. A passport not endorsed ECR is ECNR automatically.
- Clearance applies to travel for employment. ECR passport holders travelling for other purposes do not need it.
- Protector of Emigrants offices grant the clearance.
The official wording
No specific mention of ECNR is made on the passports and the ones not endorsed as ECR, automatically belong to ECNR category.
